Endress+Hauser Canada earns LEED Gold certification for its Burlington facility

Last year, the new Endress+Hauser Canada Ltd. Customer Experience Centre opened in Burlington, Ont. Recently, the state-of-the-art facility won LEED Gold certification, recognizing its status as a pace setter for sustainable design and construction. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an international symbol of sustainability excellence.

As the 47,000-square-foot facility houses industrial processes that often draw substantial energy, this certification is an important accomplishment for the multi-use Customer Experience Centre.

More energy generated than consumed

The facility was developed in part by mcCallumSather the Prime Architect and Mechanical Engineers, which raised the bar for sustainability and green building leadership in the process. The result was a high-performance building enclosure, creative mechanical system solutions, and sustainable-materials selection, all supported by sustainable construction practices and use of the entire site. The development team used a combination of rooftop, double-sided solar panels, heat pumps supplemented by a geothermal system, and innovative energy-conservation practices to offset what energy could not be saved through the Centre’s architectural and mechanical systems.

The building had already achieved ZCB certification, to denote that it had reached zero-carbon operations. The Centre generates more energy than it consumes, and surpluses are delivered to the Burlington Hydro grid. With both ZCB and LEED Gold certification, the Centre will have a legacy not just in Burlington, but in Endress+Hauser’s full international operations.

The Customer Experience Centre offers a stunning showcase for the family-owned Swiss corporation’s cutting-edge process measurement and instrumentation technology. Its operations include a full-scale Process Training Unit (PTU), innovative factory-acceptance testing and calibration laboratories, and multi-purpose training and office areas. The PTU is a full-demonstration platform for the latest Endress+Hauser products. Only two Endress+Hauser PTUs exist in Canada, with the other in Edmonton. Thousands of current and prospective customers have seen firsthand how to get the most from Endress+Hauser technology since the Burlington Centre opened.

The Burlington facility sets a perfect example of what industry can accomplish in green design and operation. Endress+Hauser set ambitious sustainability goals for the project, with the hope that others inside and outside the company would emulate them.
