IXARC rotary encoders with BiSS-C Interface

Always looking to enhance its products with groundbreaking innovations, POSITAL-Fraba has just announced that its IXARC line of precision magnetic encoders will soon come with BiSS-C communications interfaces. These upgraded, high-precision, absolute rotary encoders are perfect for commutation and position feedback on BLDC servo motors; they are also ideal for motion-control applications, particularly those involving medical equipment. Among their features will be robust design, 17-bit resolution, and high dynamic response of up to 12,000 revolutions per minute.

With self-powered rotation counter

Short for “Bidirectional/Serial/Synchronous-Continuous”, BiSS-C is a high-performance interface that supports real-time communication between control devices and sensors or actuators in robots and other automation systems. With this interface, the user can set operational parameters in slave devices. Communications is based on point-to-point RS-422 connections, with the possibility of daisy-chaining several devices together for more efficient cable layouts. The interface has the same physical properties as the older SSI interface does, which makes upgrades simpler. It is based on non-proprietary standards, with licences and support available for free from the nonprofit BiSS Association e.V.

POSITAL has based these new IXARC absolute encoders with BiSS-C interfaces on its popular kit or modular encoders. The multi-turn models have a 32-bit rotation measurement range, for more than two billion revolutions, and the rotation counters are self-powered – drawing from Wiegand energy-harvesting technology, which eliminates the need for gear drive systems or backup batteries. These encoders are price-efficient due to this mechanical simplicity.

These BiSS-C-enabled precision magnetic encoders come in a broad range of mechanical configurations, as other POSITAL encoders do, with various options for housing and flanges, shaft type, and level of environmental protection. They are available with a 36-millimetre housing, which allows them to fit into the same mounting footprint that accommodates Size 15 resolvers. But what makes these units different from resolvers is their multi-turn absolute digital precision measurements, which makes A/D converters unnecessary.

To find the appropriate IXARC sensor for a specific need, including precision magnetic encoders, POSITAL recommends using the product-finder tool on its website. Customers can specify product features and choose from there.
