The 6AXX six-axis load cell by Interface

Among the many great manufacturers of industrial test and measurement devices whose products are available in Canada from Durham Instruments is Interface Advanced Force Measurement. Interface’s portfolio of solutions includes the 6AXX six-axis load cell, which can measure forces in three mutually perpendicular axes at the same time – and in three simultaneous torques about those same axes. The Model 6A series comes in five different designs for various applications.

Calculating load and torque values

In addition to measuring force and toque in all six axes, this six-axis load cell by Interface benefits users with its compact size, its low crosstalk, and its temperature compensation. It also has six full bridges that provide mV/V output on six independent channels, as well as a 36-term coefficient matrix for calculating the load and torque values in each axis. The Model BSC8 eight-channel amplifier with USB PC interface, for simplifying data analysis, is also available.

Variations of these load cells include the following:

  • Model 6A27. Recommended for sports medicine, biomechanics, and control of assembly and handling processes in micromechanics. Offers integration into wind-tunnel models and into handles of medical tools.
  • Model 6A40. For collision detection, “teach-in”, presence or error detection, medical/prosthetics/orthopedics, gait analysis, sports medicine, and comfort/ergonomics.
  • Model 6A68. Recommended for similar tasks as the 6A40, but larger in size.
  • Model 6A154. Combines low force with high moment capacity. Recommended for wind-tunnel balances.
  • Model 6A175. Automation and robotics, press force, and seismic studies.

Also available is a BSC8 multi-channel amplifier. Its features include eight channels, 200,000 samples per second, 16-bit resolution, USB connection to a PC, graphic and logging software, NI LabView compatibility, Tare via button or software, and software that calculates force and moment values.

The Interface six-axis load cell works for many industrial and scientific applications in aerospace, robotics, medical research (orthopedics and biomechanical), and the automotive sector. Durham Instruments also recommends it for use in such industries as general manufacturing, automation and controls, food processing, forestry, education, the military, mining, packaging, power generation, alternative energy, transportation, and research and development.
