The Brüel & Kjær LDS V406 magnet shaker

Durham Instruments supplies a broad selection of devices by Brüel & Kjær, such as the LDS V406 permanent magnet shaker. This unit is commonly used for general vibration tests, but is also popular in universities and research facilities. It is suitable for a broad range of workplace applications.

Among these applications are fatigue and resonance testing of small electronics and the study of biomedical materials and devices. The LDS V406 can also be employed as a non-seismic pickup, velocity transducer, or high-speed actuator.

Adequate support for test loads

The LDS V406 is a versatile, dependable instrument designed for maximum performance, with a usable frequency range from five to 9,000 hertz. When supplied as standard, it has a nominal peak sine rating of 98 newtons. If paired with the recommended LDS PA500Lamplifier and cooled with an external fan, it can produce a sine vector force of 196 newtons.

The shaker has an armature diameter of 38 millimetres and incorporates a robust yet lightweight moving armature with adequate support for test loads without undermining force capability. To afford the armature with axial support and enhance lateral and rotational restraints, two laminated-fibre flexures are bonded to it.

The device typically comes base-mounted, but trunnion mounting is available. The user can add an auxiliary suspension unit when conducting vibration screening on large, spring-mounted structures. This allows the LDS V406 to hang vertically from the device under test, virtually increasing payload capacity. Unlike with regular operation, the auxiliary suspension enables the obverse movement.

Among the use scenarios for this magnet shaker:

  • modal and structural analyses, including civil engineering applications like bridge testing;
  • vibration screening of small components and testing of electronic assemblies;
  • laboratory experiments, including powder separation/compacting;
  • testing of medical devices and material;
  • fatigue and resonance testing;
  • accelerometer calibration; or
  • machinery condition monitoring and vibration measurement.

The versatility of this magnet shaker enables use in a variety of sectors. Durham Instruments recommends it for applications in general manufacturing, aerospace, automation, food processing, forestry, the medical field, the military, mining, packaging, power generation, alternative energy, and transportation.
