Festo’s VEMD mass flow controller suits ventilators and oxygen devices

The latest addition to the family of piezo-based control valves at Festo Canada is the VEMD mass flow controller. This valve has been designed to control air flow proportionally in portable oxygen devices, as well as ventilators, bioreactors, and cell-culture fermenters. The VEMD control valve responds more than 30 times more quickly to set-point changes than do comparable controllers on the market.

Dynamic control, low energy consumption

The piezo-based technology for this mass flow controller facilitates compact design, dynamic control, and low energy consumption. Other key benefits include no-heat generation, silent operation, and long service life. The power consumption is rated at only one watt, which is highly recommended for extending battery life in portable oxygen systems. Businesses can also use this control valve in oxygen therapy machines that are designed for emergency ventilation and aftercare. The device is not magnetic, so it will not interfere with other medical equipment.

The user can easily adjust and control gas flow linearly, by entering a set point between zero and ten volts. To ensure precision mass flow control and dynamic response, the VEMD also has an integrated control circuit with a thermal sensor. Festo deems the unit to be suitable for applications outside of the life sciences too – such as process gas applications, like creating a protective atmosphere of nitrogen dioxide or carbon dioxide.
