Industrial transformation relies on automation.

Festo Canada has developed various automation products for electromobility, green hydrogen, bioreactors, and other applications related to industrial transformation. The manufacturer knows automation is the key to achieving industrial transformation at an acceptable cost, while keeping up with anticipated ecological innovations.

The portfolio includes many solutions for clean, economical dismantling and recycling of used batteries, as industrial transformation is most evident in electromobility.

Four steps in mechanical disassembly

Recycling plants use Festo’s space-saving gantries with electric and pneumatic axes in the first step of the battery-recycling process, for dismantling packs into modules, battery cells, and other components. These gantries have the required flexibility for different battery designs. This fully automated mechanical disassembly consists of four steps – checking the cooling circuit, cutting open the adhesive bead, fixing the upper part of the housing in place with linear swing clamps, and lifting the housing’s upper part with vacuum suction cups.

Recycling rare minerals to produce lithium-ion batteries is an application that employs various Festo process automation components, like angle seat valves that shut off gaseous or liquid media in piping systems. Other relevant products include butterfly valve units, linear actuators, and classic modular valve terminals.

The company makes solutions that support industrial transformation in green hydrogen with the right technical innovations. In addition, for safe hydrogen production with electrolysis, Festo offers robust, corrosion-resistant VOFC solenoid valves, plus the VTUG valve terminal with 48 valve functions per terminal; these units are certified for SIL and global use in hazardous conditions.

With bioprocesses increasing in importance for industry, Festo manufactures many automation solutions to serve the growing biologization market in many areas, including gassing, liquid handling, and the integrated automation of bioreactors. For instance, photosynthesis is a central metabolic pathway for growing algae, and Festo offers two options for injecting gases in a controlled manner in this application: the VEMD mass flow controller for air and carbon dioxide, and the VTUX valve terminal, which bridges the gap between electrical and pneumatic automation. Finally, the CPX-E control system allows exact control of pH value, temperature, gassing, and light in bioreactors.
