Thanks to Endress+Hauser’s 2DS-Ex-I intrinsically safe module, data from Memosens sensors in hazardous areas can be transmitted to a PLC via a Liquiline transmitter located in a safe area. Such a layout simplifies installation and maintenance.

To simplify connection of Memosens sensors in designated hazardous areas of a plant to a PLC or other controller, Endress+Hauser Canada Ltd. has launched a new specialty transmitter module. The 2DS Ex-i intrinsically safe sensor input modules slot into a CM44x Liquiline multichannel controller, which transmits sensor information to the PLC.

With the CM44 series, the layout simplifies installation and maintenance, which saves time and expense, while helping to optimize cable pathways.

No cabling conduits required

Businesses can locate a CM44 unit in a safe area while supporting intrinsic safe loops with any sensor located in hazardous zones up to 100 metres away, with the protection status accorded to the 2DS Ex-i module. Loops do not need conduits for the cabling or protective housing for the sensor in these arrangements, since the 2DS Ex-i in the CM44x offers the required electrical and physical barrier, with all the required approvals. Areas with hazardous designations are frequently interspersed within a plant – for instance, inlets at wastewater-treatment facilities, mixing processes in the manufacture of cosmetics, distillery applications in food processing, ballast water treatment on oil and gas vessels, and chromatographic and filtration processes in life sciences.

Every 2DS Ex-i module includes interfaces to connect two digital sensor cable loops, and each CM44x model can host one-to-three 2DS modules, depending on the variant. So the CM448 can host up to six connectable Ex-i-rated intrinsic safe loops, with capacity for three modules. This includes all Memosens 1.0 and 2.0 sensors with inductive coupling technology, including pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and chlorine sensors. The sensor data that a CM44x device receives and transmits includes measurement and process information, as well as the diagnostic and monitoring data of Endress+Hauser’s own proprietary Heartbeat Technology if so equipped.

The 2DS Ex-i is also compatible with the Liquiline CM44P, an innovative transmitter that lets operators blend process photometers for measuring light properties with sensors for other parameters, like pH, ORP, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen. Users can combine up to two photometers and four Memosens sensors in monitoring applications, including chromatography, fermentation, phase separation, and filtration.
