The Curtiss-Wright NRH300DP No-Contact Rotary Position Sensor, available from Durham Instruments

Durham Instruments is the supplier that Canadian industry trusts for a wide range of measurement instruments by renowned manufacturers. One of these manufacturers is Curtiss-Wright, which makes the NRH300DP No-Contact Rotary Position Sensor – which offers an optimum blend of safety, high performance, and low cost.

This Curtiss-Wright rotary position sensor operates with proven Hall-effect sensor technology in low-profile, eight-millimetre housing. It also includes a separate magnet for true no-contact sensing.

Has unlimited mechanical life

A versatile instrument, the NRH300DP has a sealed design that enables high performance levels in applications involving water, dust, shock, vibration, or temperature, making it perfect for hostile, on- and off-highway vehicle environments. Durham Instruments recommends this rotary position sensor for many industries, including general manufacturing, aerospace, automation, education, the military, mining, power generation, alternative energy, transportation, and research and development.

Features include the following:

  • Unlimited mechanical life, with freedom from wear;
  • Simple mounting;
  • Measurement angles from 30 to 360 degrees;
  • Supply options of five volts (V) or nine to 30 V;
  • Dual redundant outputs;
  • Analog output of 0.5-4.5 or 0.2-4.8 V;
  • Failsafe outputs;
  • Sealing to IP69K;
  • Flying leads for connection; and
  • Optional PWM output.

The sensor also includes onboard diagnostic functions, enabling it to put outputs into safe, predetermined states if it detects an internal error. With its innovative circuit design, the NRH300DP can be powered by a regulated five-V supply or any source ranging from nine to 30 V, like an automobile battery.

Users can set the electrical output span to correspond with rotations from 20 to 360 degrees, and the angle of the supplied magnet relative to the sensor body determines the positional information. The maximum air gap between the magnet and the sensor is 5.5 millimetres (mm), and concentric offsets as high as two mm can be tolerated with minimal effect on output linearity.

The second, redundant output can be used for checking errors in hazardous applications, and the magnet can be supplied in a convenient carrier, housed in a bolt, as a plug or loose.
