The Festo CMMT MP family of multi-protocol servo drives are configurable as EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, PROFINET, and Modbus TCP.

Festo Canada has launched its CMMT MP line of multi-protocol servo drives, each of which is configurable for Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, PROFINET and Modbus TCP, as needed. Switching between protocols on the drive is fast and easy. These drives also are backwards-compatible with single-protocol CMMT drives, using identical cabling and mounting.

Because servo drives are in short supply across industry and have long lead times, original-equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are welcoming this product line.

A unified drive family

The CMMT MP line helps machine builders that support multiple communications protocols to reduce their own servo-drive inventories. A unified drive family boosts engineering productivity through familiarity with a single platform, while simplifying technical support and accessing a robust supply chain for competitively priced servo drives. By lowering its own part numbers from 24 to eight, Festo has shown the advantages of the multi-protocol approach.

CMMT MP drives allow engineers to select the right protocols for their networks, directly on the units or by logging in with the free, downloadable Festo Automation Suite commissioning software, then choosing a bus protocol from a drop-down menu. OEMs consolidating on these drives can support their customers more efficiently and cost-effectively as North American industry becomes more diversified in its applications of Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, PROFINET, or Modbus TCP.

Two notable models in this series are the CMMT-ST-MP compact DC servo drive and the CMMT-AS-MP compact AC servo drive. The former unit is rated up to 300 watts and is ideal for builders who need small, high-quality, readily available drives. The latter model is rated up to six kilowatts. Festo plans to launch two compact variations of the CMMT-AS-MP model later this year, rating nine and 12 kilowatts.

In developing these drives, Festo had an opportunity to update internal electronics of CMMT units with the latest components – which are easier to obtain and help to shorten supply-chain turnaround times while improving performance and dependability. Reducing the amount of part numbers strengthens the manufacturer’s ability to support servo-drive users and simplify its own manufacturing and part procurement,
