New Loctite coating a breakthrough in power plant maintenance

It’s no secret that power plant critical components take a lot of abuse. Components such as coal burner nozzle tips are not only exposed to extreme heat, but they also experience wear due to the flow of fine coal dust. Because of this, burner tips are highly vulnerable to failure, resulting in huge efficiency losses and even plant outages.

In an article written by Pradeep Klair, global market development manager for Henkel’s power segment, and posted on the company’s website, Klair details how Henkel’s Loctite brand of products addresses these vulnerabilities. 

“At Henkel, we’re always looking for better ways to tackle critical maintenance issues with our Loctite brand products,” Klair writes. “That quest led to the development of a new solution for power generation maintenance — Loctite PC 7000 High Temperature Abrasion Resistant Coating.”

The product is a water-based, environmentally responsible, three-component rapid setting silica-based composite coating system that offers multiple advantages. First of all, it protects industrial processing equipment like coal tip burners in boilers against wear due to abrasion at harsh temperatures of up to 1100 degrees C (2012 degrees F). In addition, it acts as a protective barrier against surface abrasion and softening of the tip surface in the harshest industrial conditions, such as those where burner tips are exposed to the radiated heat of boiler house fire. Another bonus: the coating allows components to retain their original shape much longer, resulting in sustained boiler efficiency and reduced unplanned downtime.

Without the extra layer of protection that Loctite PC 7000 High Temperature Abrasion Resistant Coating provides, the tips will need to be replaced more frequently, which isn’t an easy task. Plants must also factor in replacement part costs and the lost production costs that occur during downtime.
