New edition of CSA oil and gas pipeline standard available in June

The success of Canada’s oil and natural gas industry depends on the safe transport of energy products over long distances via pipelines. Standards like CSA Z662 – Oil and Gas Pipeline Systems, first published in 1994 and updated every four years, are designed to help ensure this safety and success. 

The latest edition of CSA Z662 is scheduled for release at the end of June 2015. Representing the culmination of more than 40 years of pipeline standards development, the 2015 edition expands the standard’s scope and provides greater clarifications on specific clauses that help reduce risk and improve efficiency and reliability in pipeline projects. 

CSA Z662 was created to provide guidance on the safe design, construction and maintenance of pipeline systems used for:

• Liquid hydrocarbons, including crude oil, multiphase fluids, condensate and liquid petroleum products;
• Natural gas liquids and liquefied petroleum gas;
• Oilfield water/steam; and 
• Carbon dioxide used in oilfield enhanced recovery schemes.

The standard is referenced in legislation by provinces, territories and the federal government, making it critical for all industry professionals to understand and apply the requirements of this new edition upon its release.

There are several key changes to the new edition of CSA Z662:

• An expanded scope, which further recognizes CO2 pipeline systems to help users implement carbon capture and storage schemes in their projects;
• Updated requirements for safety and loss management systems, integrity management programs and the engineering assessments process, which help reduce risk, improve efficiencies and raise stakeholder awareness for potential safety issues;
• Greater clarification of requirements for mitigation programs for internal corrosion, which help reduce risk and improve reliability; and
• New requirements for training and certification of field-applied coating applicators designed to help ensure all personnel involved in working with these applicators are well-trained in the specific tasks associated with them.

CSA Z662 will be available June 2015 in hard copy, PDF and in a new interactive format accessible on iOS and Android tablets and mobile devices.
