MINCO’s miniature marvels: Precision instruments redefine efficiency in sensing, monitoring

These miniature devices are small, rugged sensing units that users can install into babbitted bearings for early warning of overheating.

Teflon, polyimide, stainless steel

Among the options are single and dual elements, general-purpose or non-sparking models, and bolt-on surface RTDs. Sizes go from two to 7.6 millimetres, while over-braid lead wires come in Teflon, polyimide, and stainless steel. The following three categories of MINCO miniature instruments are available:

• ATEX-approved bearing embedment sensors. Non-sparking embedment sensors that are designed for monitoring the temperatures of thrust bearings, with four case styles that provide a broad range of installation options. These instruments are certified for use in Zone 2, Group IIC hazardous areas.
• Bearing embedment sensors. Miniature sensors that can be installed in or beneath the babbitt layer of bearing shoes, to monitor metal temperature and offer early warning of oil film breakdown. Since they are smaller than most bare ceramic elements, bearing embedment RTDs have metal cases and insulated leads, to withstand tough working conditions.
• IECEx-approved bearing embedment sensors. Immersion sensors with stainless steel thermowells for inserting right into liquid streams, with sensing probes that can be removed without breaking the fluid seals. Mod-Tronic also offers MINCO brass thermowells.

The supplier also carries related MINCO solutions, particularly feedthroughs, oil seals, and elastomer-filled cable and extension wire. The oil seal feedthrough cable option provides an oil-tight seal in which a cable exits machine housing, stopping oil wicking inside wires and leakage around wire insulation. The oil seal elastomer-filled cable option is a sensor cable with a fill that extends along the whole cable length.

Mod-Tronic also supplies lead wire and cable oil seal fittings, to prevent oil wicking with bearing sensors in rotating equipment, as well as bolt-on RTD sensors designed for easy installation in industrial environments.
