The ControlEdge RTU process controller

For the peak of test and measurement instrumentation, the smart name to trust is Thermo-Kinetics Company Limited. This includes a wide range of products manufactured by Honeywell Process Solutions – like the potent ControlEdge RTU process controller. Even in demanding work conditions, this modular, scalable controller handles all remote automation and control tasks.

The ControlEdge RTU process controller provides an integrated solution for meeting complex remote automation needs for distributed equipment, in conjunction with Honeywell’s SCADA lineup.

For simplification of field-asset management

This device is recommended especially for oil and gas applications, such as well-head monitoring, gas-flow metering, block-valve automation, and pump and compressor control. The ControlEdge RTU gives customers an edge into finding the best use of their distributed assets through efficient remote-monitoring, diagnostic, and asset-management capabilities, and it is designed for easy deployment at remote sites and to allow remote maintenance, thereby eliminating physical trips to the field.

When used with Experion SCADA, the ControlEdge RTU helps the user visualize how to simplify field-asset management, while reducing configuration time by 4/5. Among the many other innovative features of this process controller from Thermo-Kinetics:

  • Built-in HART I/O and ISA100 field instrument integration with Field Device manager
  • Efficient remote management across hundreds to thousands of RTUs
  • Electronic Flow Metering capability for fluids and gases
  • Hart-enabled onboard I/O and expansion I/O modules
  • High availability through native controller redundancy, with no switch for I/O communication required
  • Onboard wireless I/O solution that needs no specialized modules for integrating ISA100 devices
  • Operation in demanding work environments with low power consumption
  • Removable and plug-in terminal blocks, which simplify wiring while saving cabinet-assembly time

The Honeywell ControlEdge RTU process controller offers flexible communication to allow deployment in a wide variety of network types. Users can store critical information locally during communication outages or periods of low bandwidth. The instrument can help facilities to manage complex remote automation and control tasks as it converts data from complex automation systems into relevant, actionable data. By reducing travel to the field, the ControlEdge RTU decreases equipment-monitoring and diagnostic time to mere minutes.

The ControlEdge RTU is designed to withstand the toughest environments, with an operating temperature range of -40 to 75 degrees Celsius in humidity from five to 95 per cent. It has conformal coating to G3 and is certified for hazardous areas (specifically FM/CSA Class I Division 2, IECEx Zone 2, and ATEX Zone 2).

In addition, this solution was the first Remote Terminal Unit to receive ISASecure (EDSA) Level 2 certification, which recognizes the device’s cybersecurity features as used in remote automation and control tasks. Tests by exida confirm that the ControlEdge RTU is free of known cybersecurity vulnerabilities, is robust against network attacks, and conforms to ISASecure EDSA Level 2 security capabilities.

ControlEdge Builder is the RTU’s integrated tool for designing, configuring, programming, and maintaining the device. The unit also complies with IEC 61131-3 and supports such languages as Ladder Diagram (LD), Function Block Diagram (FBD), Structured Text (ST) and Sequential Function Chart (SFC).
