wire break sensors

IBIS offers three sizes of Dietz wire break sensors.

IBIS Electro-Products Corp. supplies a wide range of sensing instruments by Dietz Sensortechnik, including the IRDB series of wire break sensors. These devices are a type of inductive ring sensors designed to detect wire breakage. Dietz produces three models of these instruments, each with a different size of diameter. All three sizes share traits in common, ranging from ease of installation to a similar operating temperature range and construction.

Self-contained, compact sensor technology

The IRDB series uses a self-contained compact sensor technology with static switching operation – meaning that the wire break sensors can detect metallic objects that travel quickly or very slow. These devices are insensitive to dirt and offer high resolution, quick response time, and adjustable pulse stretching. Very easy to install, they can operate with a temperature range from -25 to 70 degrees Celsius. The sensors also have an IP65 sealing level with a sturdy polyamide housing and ceramic inner ring. They are all protected against short circuits and polarity, while operating with M12 (three-wire) connectors.

The three sizes available are 4.1, 6.1, and eight millimetres (mm) in ring diameter. The 4.1-mm and 6.1-mm sensors each have a smallest detectable wire size of 0.18 mm of copper wire, and each weighs 100 grams. The eight-millimetre version has a smallest detectable wire size of 0.25 mm of copper wire and weighs 150 grams.

Technical data common to all three sizes of IRDB wire break sensors:

  • Supply voltage: 10-35 VDC;
  • Maximum output current: 200 mA;
  • Internal power consumption: Less than ten mA;
  • Voltage insulation: 500 volts;
  • Response/release time: 0.2 milliseconds;
  • Switching frequency: Ten hertz;
  • Pulse stretching: Adjustable up to 100 milliseconds;
  • Maximum object speed: 35 metres per second; and
  • Colour: Blue.

Dietz manufactures many other sensing instruments that are available in Canada through IBIS. Examples include other kinds of ring sensors, frame sensors, fork sensors, and light curtains.
