Denso's Protal ST epoxy mastic provides first-rate protection in long-term exterior exposure.

For an unmatched portfolio of anti-corrosion and sealing solutions for pipelines and infrastructure, Denso North America is the only name a business needs to consider. These solutions include Protal liquid coatings, widely trusted for solving issues in challenging environments. Protal ST Epoxy Mastic is a surface-tolerant liquid coating designed for applications where steel grit blasting is not possible. This coating provides first-rate protection in long-term exterior exposure.

Excellent water and seawater resistance

A two-part, high-solids, quick-drying epoxy coating, Protal ST functions on its own and in combination with other topcoats for long-term water exposure, in applications involving structural steel, pipe externals, pipe racks, tanks, offshore platforms, locks, gates, and bridges. Workers can apply this epoxy mastic directly onto wire-brushed rusty steel substrates, and it achieves long-term protection through its high penetration and adhesive qualities.

Protal ST offers considerable benefits, such as minimal surface preparation, high water and seawater resistance, good resistance to acids and alkalis, low volatile organic compounds, and high flexibility, hardness, and adhesion.

Before applying this Denso liquid coating, workers must remove loose scale, rust, or foreign matter from the surface, as per SP2 “Hand Cleaning” or SP3 “Power Tool Cleaning”, or by high-pressure water wash. The next step is to clean and dry the surface with compressed air or brushing, leaving a faint metallic sheen. Next, the user pours the Protal ST hardener into the base component and mixes it slowly and thoroughly with a power whip for two minutes.

The substrate temperature must be at least three degrees Celsius above the dew-point temperature before applying coating. The user can then apply the first coat by brush or spray to a wet film thickness of 10 mils. After a minimum of at least four hours at 25 degrees Celsius, the second coat can be applied to the same wet film thickness. After the coating is fully dry, a final weather-resistant top coat can be applied by brush or spray.

Protal ST Epoxy Mastic can be applied in temperatures from -29 to 52 degrees Celsius. In temperatures lower than 10 degrees Celsius, the surface must be preheated.
