A number of products for smart structure monitoring applications are available in Canada from Durham Instruments. An optical accelerometer, temperature sensor and tilt meter — all Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) based sensors from industry leader HBM — are among the company’s monitoring options.

Optical accelerometer

The FS65 Optical Accelerometer can be used in a large range of monitoring applications where low frequency and small amplitude vibrations are present. For example, this single-axis accelerometer is suitable for measuring the level of ambient-induced vibration in civil structures. The unit is robust, with an aluminum case and IP68 packaging that ensures long-term reliability.

Optical temperature sensor

The FS63 Optical Temperature Sensor can be bonded to surfaces and materials, spot welded to structures and components, and attached or directly cast into concrete wet mix. This unit is ideal for temperature measuring applications, such as temperature mapping in large structures, also known as Structural Health Monitoring.

Optical tilt sensor

The FS64 Optical Tilt Sensor is designed to measure small angle variations towards the vertical in a large range of monitoring applications, such as in slopes and bridge pillars. The sensor uses two FBG in an innovative push-pull configuration for effective temperature compensation.

Additional details

Each of these units features a robust design, and is completely passive, making them safe to operate in hazardous environments. Additional features and advantages include their ability to connect a large number of sensors to a single optical fibre, reducing network and installation complexity, and their ability to offer remote sensing, enabling several kilometres between sensors and interrogator. In addition, they are all compatible with most interrogators.
