Ohio Broach helped a manufacturer broach its wrench jaws more effectively.

The Ohio Broach & Machine Company is a veteran of 63 years in broaching services. In that time, the company has amassed an impressive track record of success stories. Many customers have benefitted from Ohio Broach’s unique expertise and skills in design, engineering, manufacturing, sharpening, and machine building for their broaching projects. One was a manufacturer of ready-to-assemble wrench jaws, which got the solution it needed several years ago.

A better tooling process

This manufacturing company was using an insufficient tooling process for its broaching projects. Its employees were tooling wrench jaws on a small machine that had only about two feet of stroke, and the deep slot in each part was taking multiple passes to broach. This often resulted in tooling breakage, which slowed production down a lot.

A better solution was needed right away. For the best answer, the company turned to Ohio Broach.

The Ohio Broach team redesigned the slot tools to broach each deep slot in one pass. The process could now be done on a 15-ton machine with 90 inches of stroke. This new process allowed workers to broach rounded slots and serrated tooth forms in progressive operations on one machine.

Ohio Broach also recommended a three-step process of broaching, drilling, and finishing. This enabled employees to transfer materials between production stages quickly and easily, which boosted the productivity and efficiency of the operation. After every stroke of the broaching machine, the operator could remove a fully broached part from the fixture and turn around to put it in a drilling machine to drill each hole to tolerance as the next part was being broached. This drilling machine would clamp the fixture hydraulically and cycle automatically with the press of a few buttons. The third step would finish off the part with deburring, heat treatment, and black oxidization.

The customer adopted the new solution and operation method, and results were obvious immediately. Broaching projects were not only quicker and easier, but also devoid of needless repetition and shutdowns. This is a typical outcome of relying on Ohio Broach’s expertise.
