Denso anti-corrosion products were used in a recent Windsor, Ont. piping project.

Denso North America products are useful for many different kinds of industrial applications, including water distribution systems. Earlier this year, the City of Windsor, Ont. used no fewer than three Denso products when it embarked on a major waterworks installation project.

Protecting infrastructure from corrosion

In 2017, the City of Windsor contracted CoCo Construction Group to undertake a new water-main installation. Coco was tasked with installing several large sections of PVC water-main piping measuring 91 centimetres in diameter with various valve assembles, metallic restrainers, and metal fittings. To protect this new piping system, the workers chose Denso Paste, Denso Profiling Mastic and Denso Low-Temperature (LT) Petrolatum Tape.

Denso’s LT Petrolatum Tape is made of a non-woven synthetic fabric carrier, with a neutral compound that mixes saturated petroleum with inert silicious fillers. Designed to be used in cooler ambient temperatures, the tape adds long-term corrosion protection to pipes, valves, fittings and other metallic surfaces.

To apply the tape, the user first puts on a thin layer of Denso Paste, profiles any irregular surfaces or bolted areas with Denso Profiling Mastic, and then wraps the tape around the item spirally, with no less than 25 millimetres of overlap (a 55 per cent overlap is recommended for extremely corrosive environments). Overwrapping may be useful in some cases, to enhance impact strength and electrical resistance.

In the case of the Windsor project, CoCo workers assembled most of the piping before putting it underground and then completed the Denso wrapping after joining the remaining connections.

The benefits of petrolatum tape

Construction workers who install piping find a number of advantages in using Denso LT Petrolatum Tape:

  • Quick, easy installation;
  • Applicable to cold and wet surfaces;
  • Environmentally safe;
  • Resistant to ultraviolet rays;
  • Minimal surface preparation;
  • Long-term corrosion protection.
