Red-D-Arc assisted a U.A.E. manufacturing company with a difficult tank-building project.

As an internationally respected provider of welding-related products, Red-D-Arc Welderentals has a long track record of success stories. Many have involved assisting customers directly to find proper solutions for issues or unique applications. For example, last year, an oilfield-equipment and vessel manufacturer in the United Arab Emirates needed some weld automation equipment for an unusual project – and approached Red-D-Arc for help.

Twenty-five tanks in a year

This company was tasked with manufacturing 25 large tanks. Each tank needed to measure five by 25 metres, weighing about 45 tons and manufactured with material 16 millimetres thick. The client had given the company a timeframe of only a year.

Tank building was not the manufacturer’s main area of expertise. The contract had been awarded to the company only at the last minute. Major assistance with the project would be necessary for it to succeed, so the company approached Red-D-Arc.

To address these challenges, Red-D-Arc turned them over to its weld automation team. First, these experienced professionals advised the customer that long-term equipment rental was the way to go – as opposed to buying new equipment, which other suppliers were recommending. Rental would not only eliminate the time-consuming process of acquiring CAPEX approval to buy so much weld automation equipment; it would also increase the project’s profitability.

Red-D-Arc’s experts also answered the company’s questions about preventing ovality and transverse movement with the sub-assemblies. In addition to good advice, the Red-D-Arc team recommended the most suitable weld automation equipment for the project. The customer invested in six ten-ton turning roll sets, seven submerged arc packages (with LT7 tractors and DC600 power sources), ten 60-ton drive rolls, and 47 idler rolls – each of the latter equipment measuring either 30 or 60 tons. During the project, Red-D-Arc worked right by the company’s side, offering comprehensive training and on-site assistance to workers.

Results: not only did the company complete the project successfully; it became recognized in its market and began to receive similar orders from new clients. The company was also approved for Phase 2 of the tank project, which began this year.
