Vibra Finish is known as a complete solution for vibratory finishing. Part of this solution is the ability to provide both wet and dry deburring machines and finishing services.

Wet and dry deburring

These two types of deburring machines and processes are suited to different applications, and offer their own benefits. For instance, dry machines offer a lower cost and are well suited to applications where the parts are all made of a similar material, such as all carbon steel.

In contrast, wet machines are essential when the application involves grinding different metals. That’s because metals, such as aluminum, can produce combustible dust. If steel, for example, is later run in the same system, sparks may ignite the remaining dust and cause a fire or explosion. Wet systems eliminate this danger because they do not create metal dust.

Another benefit of wet machines is that abrasive media typically lasts longer, especially when the right coolant is used. In fact, using a water-soluble coolant (often made up of 95 per cent water and five per cent coolant) can almost double the life of abrasives when compared to using just water.

Additional equipment

Both wet and dry machines involve the use of some additional equipment. Dry machines require a dust collector, which may use either a vacuum or a wet tank system to capture debris. Meanwhile, wet machines usually incorporate equipment such as a filter and drying unit. The filter removes grinding debris from the coolant and recirculates it to where it's needed. Drying units use squeegee rolls to remove coolant from deburred and grained parts. The units may also use a blower to get rid of any remaining liquid.

A variety of abrasives may be incorporated into automated deburring systems. Most of these systems use at least one wide-belt abrasive rotating on a drum. Many systems also have barrel brushes spanning the width of the work area. Also available are several specialty abrasive heads, such as rotating brushes and discs.

More information

Vibra Finish has a processing lab used to determine the best finishing options for the customer’s application. When the application involves unique challenges, the company can develop a new technique or process that solves the problem. That includes flat parts that stick together, parts that are sensitive to water, or those that are prone to bending. Vibra Finish recommends customers send their sample parts to the processing lab for a free assessment.
