Vibra Finish can provide a variety of mass finishing services. The company has the experience and capability to handle any type of mass finishing project, while eliminating common problems such as burrs, greasy parts and heat treat scale.

Mass finishing basics

Mass finishing refers to a group of manufacturing processes for the simultaneous finishing of large quantities of parts. This type of finishing is used to clean, polish, deflash, deburr, descale, burnish, radius, brighten, remove rust, surface harden, break off die cast runners, or prepare parts for additional finishing processes.

Mass finishing processes can be set up in either batch or continuous systems. In batch systems, group workpieces are added, run and then removed before the next batch is added. In continuous systems, the workpieces enter one end and leave at the other as finished pieces. In addition, these systems can be sequenced. This involves using multiple mass finishing processes, usually to achieve a progressively finer finish.

Different types of mass finishing

There are two main types of mass finishing: tumble finishing (also referred to as “barrel finishing”) and vibratory finishing. Both types use a cyclical action that creates grinding contact between surfaces. A finishing medium is typically added, but the workpieces can also be finished against each other.

Mass finishing can be either dry or wet. Wet mass finishing involves the use of lubricants, cleaners and abrasives, while dry mass finishing does not. The cycle times for mass finishing processes vary greatly depending on the material. Nonferrous workpieces can be finished in as little as 10 minutes, while hardened steel workpieces can take up to two hours.

Mass finishing expertise

Because of the random action of mass finishing processes, it is as much an art as it is a science. Vibra Finish can provide the expertise needed to achieve the desired results. The company first determines the best process for the requirements, and how the results can be tailored to the client’s specifications.
