Vibratory finishing of metal equipment is a complex process, with a number of applications and products involved – including choosing the right media and compound for the job. Vibra Finish, which has more than 40 years of finishing expertise, not only uses these products in its finishing services, but also sells a variety of media and compounds for industrial use.

Four kinds of media

In the context of finishing and tumbling, media refers to any material that changes the appearance of a metal part – usually an abrasive, but also any other substance can clean, polish, abrade, or separate parts. Media is usually applied in general-purpose metal polishing and deburring tasks.

Vibra Finish sells four basic categories of media:

• Aluminum oxide – available in six different types, in different-sized boxes: Aluminum Oxide 00, 1, 1 1/2, 3 1/2, XA, and XM;
• Ceramic media – useful for fast deburring and tough metal removal, and especially for cutting hard or heavy metals. It is also the best choice in applications that require media of smaller dimensions. Available from Vibra Finish in five different types;
• Plastic media – recommended for brass, aluminum, and other soft metals, as well as stringy materials. Often used for pre-painted and pre-plated finishing, polishing, and cutting. Known for providing a smooth, long-lasting finish. Available in five different types; and
• Steel media – causes surfaces to become work-hardened by imparting compressive stress; this results in longer cycle lives and more resistance to wear. Compacting action reduces porosity and increases resistance to corrosion. Available in four different types.

Vibra Finish also offers 15 types of compounds to keep media and part surfaces clean, including 13 types of Vibra-Glo, which are useful as rust inhibitors, alkaline cleaners, mild acidic burnishers, pickling agents, powdered concentrates, washing compounds, or all-purpose cleaners – depending on the material being finished and the required surface finish.
