vertical broaching machine

Ohio Broach manufactures its own vertical broaching machines, for customer use and more.

The Ohio Broach and Machine Company not only provides broaching services for manufacturers; it also builds broaching machines – both for its own use and to sell to customers who want to perform their own broaching. For example, the company makes its own dual-ram vertical broaching machine. This machine has a compact and versatile design that results in minimal floor space used, helping to reduce costs.

Long service life and durability

One of many models of broaching machine that Ohio Broach produces, this dual-ram vertical machine has capacities that range from five to 15 tons and strokes going from 48 to 72 inches. Its hardened and ground steel ways are constructed out of high carbon steel, which is hardened and tempered before it is ground to closely controlled tolerances, to ensure long service life and durability.

Another key feature of this vertical broaching machine is its precise ram slides, made from close-grain, high-tensile cast iron. Workers have scraped the slide surfaces by hand for exact fits and flaked them for maximum lubrication penetration. The compact design includes a ram slide and table sub-assemblies mounted on a rigid base weldment, of which the lower portion serves as a coolant reservoir.

In addition, Ohio Broach has incorporated a high-performance, fixed-displacement vane pump into the vertical broaching machine in conjunction with other high-performance valves and controls. The result is a reliable open-loop drive-system design. The dual ram machine is available with the traditional alternating ram cycle or with individual ram operation, essentially two machines on a common base.

The standard model of this machine has platen, non-moving tables, but other table types are also available. Examples include tip-back tables that tilts the work-holding fixture back 35 degrees from the horizontal and infeed shuttle tables that moves on a horizontal plane, allowing the machine to make repeat passes until a predetermined cut depth is reached. A combination of both optional table types, offering a more versatile design, is also available upon request. Machine-tool grey and vista green are the standard colours.
