Firing Industries is proud to promote Hosokawa Micron Powder Systems in Canada. Among its many offerings, Firing carries the company’s HE Mikro UMP Attrition Mill, a high-speed cutting mill designed to reduce the size of plastics, polymers and fibrous materials to a fine powder. It’s particularly suited for materials that don’t respond well to other forms of impact milling, and also has the capability to grind heat-sensitive and soft materials without liquid nitrogen or conditioned air. The unit can handle these applications thanks to its innovative design and best-in-class features.

The design

One of the features that sets this attrition mill apart from the rest is its attrition plate rotor, which is uniquely engineered to finely grind heat-sensitive materials. The serrated teeth of the rotating and stator plates create shear forces that cut materials into fine powders with a narrow particle size distribution. The plates are highly durable and can be easily resharpened to maintain performance.

The fabricated grinding chamber is another key feature. It has a hinged access door that is secured with a single closure device for easy and quick access. The bearing housing has a cantilevered design and includes maintenance-free, sealed-for-life bearings. In addition, there are double lip seals and a gas purge between the drive and process areas to eliminate material contamination and premature wear of drive components.

The process

The Mikro UMP Attrition Mill can easily tackle jobs that other mills cannot thanks, in large part, to the reduction process it uses. First, the raw material enters the grinding zone from a feeding device through the centrally located feed inlet. The material is reduced as it makes its way through the adjustable stator plate and high-speed rotating grinding plate, and continues to reduce in size as it passes through the tapered plates. Once the material is finely ground, it exits the grinding zone and discharges into a product receiver. The user has control over the fineness of the end product, as this is determined by the number of teeth on the plates, rotational speed of the rotor, and the gap between the plates.
