IBIS carries various Dietz ultrasonic sensors.

Dietz Sensortechnik makes its unparalleled range of sensing instruments available in Canada through IBIS Electro-Products Corp. The lineup includes ultrasonic sensors, which work with the travel-time measurement of high-frequency sonic impulses. These impulses are sent periodically, reflecting on the object and returning as an echo to the sensor. This allows detection of a wide range of objects, even when contamination has altered the colour or surface; these sensors even detect glass and transparent foils.

Suitable for tight spaces

These Dietz sensors have sonic beams that can be deflected perfectly over inclined reflecting surfaces, which makes them particularly suitable for tight spaces. Dietz ultrasonic sensors cover ranges from two centimetres to eight metres, and they can detect small and moving objects reliably through the high sound power.

Common applications include level control of fluids and granules, ranging and distance control, strip tension and catenary adjustment, edge guide control, height sensing, minimum or maximum control, and counting and detection of objects and people. They are also useful in numerous automation, machinery, and automotive-assembly tasks.

Regarding the sensing range, the damping of the sound relies primarily on the air temperature, the humidity, and the atmospheric pressure; therefore, sensing distances can be exceeded or fall below. The level of the measured value is generally proportionate to the level of damping and vice-versa. Aside from the difference between switching and analog sensors, a variety of different features are available, including Teach-in, synchronized inputs, and impulse lengthening.

IBIS carries nearly a dozen models of these ultrasonic sensors. The standard colour is silver or white. Most of them have a 1½-metre sensing distance and weigh 100 grams. Output variations include analog, PNP, and NPN. Other common highlights of some sensors include axial sensing head, adjustable maximum sensing point, high chemical resistance, short-circuit and polarity protection, and self-contained, compact, ultrasonic technology. Construction material varies – examples include stainless steel, nickel-plated brass, PVDF, and/or PTFE.

Also available is the Dietz three-millimetre ultrasonic fork sensor, a U-shape instrument for label detection, counting and verifying, packaging and material-handling equipment, and many other industrial uses.
