Versatile pieces of hardware

Turnbuckles are devices used to adjust tension or length in ropes, cables, and tie rods. A typical turnbuckle consists of two threaded eyebolts, each screwed into an end of the hardware. The user adjusts tension by rotating the frame, which screws both eyebolts at the same time without twisting the bolts or attached cables.

As versatile pieces of hardware, turnbuckles can be built or adapted for many applications. In shipping, for example, workers use them to tension the rings and lashings of a ship; in construction, small turnbuckles support fences, while much larger ones help support buildings and bridges. Even in boxing and wrestling, they are useful for attaching ring ropes to posts.

Varying in mass from about ten grams to thousands of kilograms, turnbuckles are usually employed in applications that require additional tension. They are sometimes used in pipe systems for minor adjustments for field inconsistencies, allowing minimal resistance when loads are transferred to support components. They are often used in aerospace, construction, shipping, sports and entertainment.
