The Tumpf TruTool FCN 250 nibbler, available in Canada from Dobco

Dobco Equipment is Canada’s premier source for industrial nibblers by Trumpf, which recently released a new variation that can cut fibre composite materials as thick as 2.5 millimetres. The TruTool FCN 250 is the first tool of its kind worldwide, in its ability to separate various fibre materials – allowing businesses to leverage the benefits of nibbling in new application fields. Among this device’s many advantages are a significant decrease in emissions and longer operational life of wear parts.

Personal protective equipment rarely required

Up to now, workers have had to use saws, milling cutters, or angle grinders for separating thick fibre composite components. Not only is it very hard to get smooth-cut edges and high precision out of these tools; in addition, they emit excessive smoke and hazardous dust in the process. These new Trumpf industrial nibblers are extremely precise, and users do not even need personal protective equipment in most cases, as the tools emit very little dust.

The FCN 250 can also separate thermosetting plastics, thermoplastic polymers, carbon-fibre reinforced plastics, glass-fibre reinforced plastics, and aramid-fibre reinforced plastics. Trumpf created this versatile tool by altering the nibbler’s cutting geometry and cutting tools to accommodate fibre composites. The manufacturer has adapted nibbling technology to go beyond the usual metalworking applications.

Another unique benefit is the FCN 250’s working speed, which can reach as high as 1.9 metres per minute. It gives operators a clear view of their work surfaces, enabling precise separating cuts along scribed lines. Users can cut in straight lines or tight radii, and they can rotate it all the way around, which makes hard-to-reach areas easier to nibble.

In addition, these industrial nibblers from Dobco have a special coating on their wear parts that extend their service life. One die can now nibble 300 metres of reinforced plastic two millimetres thick before replacement is necessary.
