Thermo-Kinetics, the Mississauga, Ont.-based manufacturer and distributor of process measurement and control solutions, can supply SmartDGA monitors from LumaSense. These monitors are used for Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA), and offer unparalleled value, flexibility and ease-of-use. When it comes to monitoring the health of transformers and load tap changers, the SmartDGA is a revolutionary solution.

Game-changing advantages

The SmartDGA offers a number of benefits that help overcome three of the main challenges involved with DGA monitoring. Firstly, the cost-effectiveness of SmartDGA meters allow for wide-scale deployment, as they offer affordable pricing and the lowest overall total cost of ownership. This is in stark contrast to most DGA monitors that are so expensive that they limit the ability to create a Smart Grid.

Another major benefit of the SmartDGA is its flexibility. As opposed to online DGA systems that are not able to accurately identify faults and mitigate them, this meter is capable of providing continuous condition monitoring, and finding coking and other faults.

While most DGA technologies involve cumbersome installation and maintenance, SmartDGA monitors are easy to install and do not require routine maintenance or calibration.

Different types of SmartDGA monitors

The various types of monitors available include the new SmartDGA Gauge, which is the first dedicated online load tap changer (LTC) monitor that can be used to assess LTC health by monitoring ethylene and acetylene.

Another monitor available is the SmartDGA Guard. This monitor is designed to prevent transformer failures by measuring and reporting key gases such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide and acetylene, as well as moisture.

Lastly, the SmartDGA Guide is a monitor that can measure nine different gases and moisture, providing comprehensive online DGA monitoring.
