petrolatum tape

Denso's petrolatum tape system has been used in Toronto's Harbourfront revitalization project.

For more than 80 years, industrial users have trusted Denso North America’s petrolatum tape for protecting pipelines, tank bases, fittings, and steel structures. The manufacturer’s petrolatum tape system is an ideal solution for protecting metal surfaces from corrosion and other kinds of damage – both above and below ground, regardless of temperature.

Denso protection products came in very handy last year, in fact, when UCC Group Inc. was contracted to work on the ongoing development and revitalization of the waterfront district at Queen’s Quay in Toronto.

Top protection for support rods

This 2,000-acre downtown area is undergoing redesign and reconstruction in preparation for Ontario’s first LEED Gold certified neighbourhood, a $1.1 billion project. UCC Group was hired to reconstruct the shoreline wall that prevents erosion along the waterfront, and part of this assignment involved redesigning the wall’s horizontal support rods to use diagonal anchor rods that would enable the construction of high-rise buildings with deep roots.

The company was tasked with exposing, evaluating, and repairing these rods and coating them with a corrosion-protection system. As these rods went back hundreds of feet horizontally, the contractors had their work cut out for them. For this phase, UCC Group chose products from Denso North America.

First, the contractors coated the shoreline wall rods by hand with a thin layer of Denso Paste, a primer that displaces moisture, arrests already-existing corrosion, and functions as an adhesive for petrolatum tape. Then the workers applied Denso Petrolatum Tape by wrapping it around the rods spirally with a 55 per cent overlap. They also encapsulated the rods in conduits and concrete blocks, all of which were buried underground to support the new landscaping and pathways that will be part of the new development.

Not only is Denso’s petrolatum tape system reliable in preventing corrosion-related failure, it is also a very cost-efficient solution. With Denso’s petrolatum tape system in place, these support rods will remain protected from corrosion for years to come – and Toronto can rest assured that the infrastructure of its newest neighbourhood will stay strong and safe from damage.
