Overhead lifting equipment often requires end-of-arm tooling to attach, manipulate, position and release the load it’s lifting. From clamps and grippers to magnets, vacuum attachments and more, there is a wide selection of tooling to choose from. To help determine the appropriate tooling integration system for the application, there are a number of factors to consider.

Four leading considerations

Tooling is used in such applications as automotive manufacturing, workstation assembly, packaging, palletizing, conveyor systems, workholding, material transfer and picking parts. Each of these applications has different needs and, therefore, may require different tooling. An understanding of the application is key in determining what tooling integration system is the most appropriate. Consider the following factors:

  • The weight of the load to be lifted;
  • The type of attachment to the load;
  • The lifting motion and process; and
  • The ergonomic factors related to operation of the equipment.

Rigid column manipulators, for example, are ideal for offset load applications. Vertical travel requirements combined with changes in part orientation are easily handled with end-effector tooling mounted to the rigid mast. The rigid column can be suspended from overhead rails or bridge systems, providing area coverage for the process.

Process arms, on the other hand, are ideal for extended reach applications, providing increased reach and control of the load through the articulating arm structure and travelling carriage.

Turn to the experts

As a leading manufacturer of overhead material lifting systems and equipment, Engineered Lifting Systems & Equipment has expertise in all aspects of overhead lifting systems, including the design, manufacture and installation of this equipment. One of the manufacturer’s offerings is tooling integration, which includes systems planning, design and implementation, as well as on-site training for operators. The company's design and manufacturing teams work together with the customer to ensure the tooling meets the necessary requirements of the lifting application.
