replacement expansion joint

A potato-processing facility received a better solution from HOLZ Rubber Company.

Expansion joints are among the specialties of HOLZ Rubber Company, a major American manufacturer that provides these products in Canada through Northern Industrial Supply Company (NISCO). The HOLZ team has a lengthy track record of coming to the rescue when a business needs an urgent replacement expansion joint.

For example, a potato-processing facility put its trust in HOLZ a few years ago, when it was having trouble with a new joint.

Incompatible material and design

The story began when a distributor phoned HOLZ to inquire about a replacement expansion joint for a potato plant who needed it as soon as possible. The client had installed a new joint only two days before, but the replacement joint was already failing them. When the plant had inspected the system, it had found that the new joint appeared to be delaminating and that the rubber was softening because of heat or chemical attack. Another issue was that the system was being exposed to vacuum pressure that had caused the joint to collapse.

What distinguishes potato-processing facilities like this one is that they make a variety of products for human and animal consumption. To convert raw potatoes into chips, flakes, pellets, and other products, their systems use processes involving heat, steam, and oils. Because these conditions are harsh, expansion joints must be constructed out of materials that are compatible with the heat or chemicals to which they are exposed; otherwise, failure will result.

The problem was urgent, so the HOLZ team went right into action. They found that the plant’s current joint had a material and design that were incompatible with the system’s high temperatures and chemicals. So HOLZ recommended a new joint made of HRPL7 material, which was suitable for high temperatures in wet locations and had excellent resistance to these chemicals.

The plant accepted the replacement expansion joint, and it turned out to be the perfect choice. Today, the company remains happy with the HRPL7 joint and continues to use this make in other applications. With NISCO’s assistance, HOLZ can help Canadian plants in the same way.
