Industries may change, but safety is always a constant.

Industries whose productivity requires significant amounts of work in hazardous locations (HazLoc) can rise and fall with economic and political pressures, but the importance of safety remains constant. A CSA Group white paper explores global HazLoc trends, recent developments in testing and certification requirements, and the options manufacturers have to get their products approved and sent to market as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Market trends

Demand for hazardous-area equipment is surging, despite recent economic challenges. In fact, Allied Market Research reveals that the industry is set to reach a value of $8,217 million by 2022. The beginnings of an upturn for oil and gas and rapid globalization of the pharmaceutical, mining, and mechanization industries have led to more stringent protection regulations – significantly boosting demand for explosive-proof equipment. Automation and digitization in manufacturing, free trade pacts, adoption of IEC standards, and partnerships among certification agencies are also helping companies to thrive.

Considerations: testing requirements around the world

Taking advantage of this ever-expanding market can be difficult without first understanding which conformity marks and standards are required in specific countries. While more countries are adopting IEC standards for equipment used in HazLoc, manufacturers still need to consider additional national or regional requirements. For example, all products marketed in the European Union (EU) must comply with the ATEX Directive, a harmonized compliance procedure accepted by all EU countries. While there are many similarities between ATEX and IEC standards, notable differences still exist. Likewise, other requirements need to be considered when selling a product in North America, with Canada and the U.S. having their own product and installation standards.

Sharpen your competitive edge

Testing and certification is a major piece of competing in the global market, but your best chance of success is working with a certification body (CB), such as CSA Group, early in the product development stage to help ensure standards are met. Given the complexity and variation in standards, we have agreements with foreign CBs to help you understand the required approvals. With comprehensive services including certification for global markets, management system audits and certifications, functional safety evaluations, and training, we can help you reach your desired market faster so that you thrive in today’s globally competitive market.
