For more than six decades, The Ohio Broach & Machine Company has been a leader in almost every kind of broaching service for manufacturers across North America. While broaching is a valued and important machining process that offers precision and efficiency, it helps to know what exactly broaching is and why it is so essential.

With all of the equipment and services Ohio Broach offers, a potential client is often schooled in the basics of broaching before deciding what option serves his or her application best.

A look at Broaching 101

Broaching is a process of removing material from metal, usually less than Rc 30 in hardness, with a toothed tool known as a broach. A broach has teeth, similar to a saw, that increase in height over its length, building the “feed” into the tool.  It also has different sections for roughing, semi-finishing, and finishing by varying the height differences of the teeth. Broaching is commonly used in precision machining, particularly when unusual shapes are required. Broached surfaces typically include serrations, splines, keyways, and flat surfaces, while workpieces commonly processed include castings, forgings, screw-machine parts, and stampings.

The two primary types of broaching service are external and internal broaching. External broaching involves running a broach linearly against the workpiece’s surface to effect a cut, most often in a vertical surface broaching machine. Internal broaching is the process of running a broach linearly through a pilot hole in the workpiece to effect a cut in a pull or push type broaching machine. What both methods have in common is that one pass is all that is required to make the cut. Either of them offers results with higher precision and in less time than most other machining processes do.

Ohio Broach not only provides almost any specific broaching service a customer may need; it also manufactures and sells broaching machines for companies to perform their own broaching applications. To keep broaching tools and machines in perfect condition for optimum results, Ohio Broach also offers sharpening, repair, and reconditioning services. With the company’s production-broaching capabilities, its highly skilled staff can machine an impressive range of parts and shapes.
