HOLZ's line of fabric expansion joints, available through NISCO

Northern Industrial Supply Co. (NISCO) in Pickering, Ont. distributes a variety of expansion joints from HOLZ Rubber Company for manufacturers. While piping, metal and flue-duct expansion joints are available, there are certain advantages to using HOLZ’s fabric expansion joints in your factory’s machinery.

The benefits

HOLZ designs its fabric expansion joints to perform well in high-temperature environments and severe applications. The company has created top-rated fabric expansion joints from extensive research and development, resulting in a product built of the most advanced materials to guarantee long life.

High-temperature expansion joints from HOLZ are built to resist corrosion and to eliminate sound and vibration. Using these joints reduces not only the number of expansion joints due to their multi-plane movement, but also the need for costly toggles, hangers and guides. The series 1200 HTG joints are constructed to withstand temperatures of more than 1,100 degrees Celsius in wet or dry services, while other designs can handle different levels of high temperatures. HOLZ’s fabric expansion joints can significantly cut engineering time, thereby helping machinery to work more efficiently.

Using the right material

While HOLZ fabric expansion joints are highly recommended for high-temperature applications, the manufacturer cautions that users must get the right material for the specific application. Although saving money is always a consideration, sometimes it is necessary to invest in a more potent fabric.

HOLZ cites an incident at a PVC plant in 2015. A boiler blower developed a suction leak after the company used an expansion joint made of non-laminated Teflon, which was pulled into the duct stream and tore after rubbing against the ductwork. According to HOLZ, the company should have used a Viton joint, which would have been strong enough to withstand the boiler blower’s pressure. Although Viton is more expensive, it would have saved money by lasting longer.

Using the proper HOLZ fabric expansion joints for the machinery will result in the highest-calibre performance in the long run.
