Ohio Broach can use its broaching services for a wide variety of applications.

Broaching, a machining technique that cuts and crafts metal objects into a variety of desired shapes, is an essential aspect of manufacturing for many products these days – more than many may realize. That is why the Ohio Broach & Machine Company continues to find its services in demand after more than 60 years. The company specializes not only in broaching, tool-sharpening, and machine-repair services, but also in manufacturing broaching machines for clients’ own use.

From implants to hand tools

Examples of the variety of applications that Ohio Broach can handle:

  • Cast Iron. Items such as cast ductile-iron motor mounts can be processed in one-pass operations, either surface-broached or broached internally.
  • Cutting Teeth. The teeth of cutting or sawing tools are easily cut with broaching applications. In one case, “on the fly” broaching produced perfect triangular teeth on pocket-knife saw blades for a client.
  • Hand Tools. One of Ohio Broach’s common services is broaching wrenches, medical hemostats, pliers, and other standard tools. For example, surface broaching can be applied to the jaws of pliers or open ends on wrenches, while box ends on wrenches can be internally broached, and one can straddle-broach joint areas on hemostats.
  • Hexes and Squares. Drill bits and other tools that need to be cut in squares and other shapes can benefit from “on the fly” broaching.
  • Internal Broaching. Also known as traditional broaching, this technique can cut key ways, splines, grooves, squares, and other forms into brass, coppers, steel, and aluminum.
  • Irregular Shapes. Broaching can create slots, angles, key ways, and radii in almost any material, especially steel.
  • Medical Implants. Ohio Broach once broached stainless steel surgical implants in a two-pass operation, on a machine that allowed for different lengths.
  • Shaft Slots. In another Ohio Broach success story, slots in three transmission shafts were broached on a patented shuttle in-feed table.
  • T-Shaped Slots. “T” shapes can be cut into brass, steel, and copper machine parts.
  • Teeth and Serrations. Gear teeth of any size can be broached for many applications.
