The Han-Modular Surge Protection Module, from HARTING

An innovator in the connector industry, the HARTING Technology Group has just upgraded its acclaimed series of industrial connectors with a new product that brings surge protection into the field. The company has introduced the Han-Modular Surge Protection Module, an alternative to more conventional means of surge protection for instrumental and control (I&C) signals.

Surge protection for I&C signals typically requires separate, external solutions that result in unnecessary expenses. In making wiring arrangements more simple, the Han-Modular Surge Protection Module uses up less space and reduces material and labour costs.

Surge protection in the connector

When used properly, HARTING’s new Surge Protection Module not only simplifies the wiring process, it also eliminates many operating faults, boosts the service life of the production line, and improves overall plant operating performance and productivity.

This module can protect up to two pairs of balanced signal interfaces with electrical isolation against normative pulses with a current of 0.4 microseconds. HARTING recommends applying the instrument for protecting analogue signal interfaces ranging between two and ten Volts. It discharges a surge energy of five kilo-volts per line through the earthed hinged frame of the Han-Modular system.

As with dozens of other Han-Modular products, the Surge Protection Module is quick and easy to install; the user can install it as part of the initial connector setup. The module can transmit up to 0.5 A and nominal 24 Volts of DC, with a protection level of approximately 50 Volts. It also eliminates the common issue of transient energy, which often interferes with signal circuits or even destroys electronic equipment: by discharging transient energy to the ground through an appropriate spring element and a grounded Han-Modular frame, the Surge Protection Module keeps the signal transmission completely devoid of disturbance.

A potential boon to both conventional manufacturing and Industry 4.0 production concepts, the Han-Modular Surge Protection Module adds extra functionality and configuration possibilities to HARTING’s group of Han-Modular connector products.
