metallic and fabric expansion joints

Expansion joints can be metallic or fabric.

Ever since its founding in 1975, Sudbury International Engineered Products Limited has been a major provider of cost-efficient, long-term solutions. The lineup includes slide pads and re-circulation control valves, but one of the company’s main specialties is two types of expansion joints: metallic and fabric expansion joints. Customers always rely on Sudbury International for expansion joints, especially those designed to work for ducting and piping systems.

Blending high flexibility with durability

What are metallic and fabric expansion joints? Assemblies that safely absorb temperature-induced expansion and contraction of construction materials, while also holding parts together and/or allowing for movement caused by earthquakes or ground settlement. A common application for Sudbury International’s fabric expansion joints is piping and ducting applications, since the joints add flexibility to ducting systems to absorb thermal growth, isolate noise and vibration, and allow for misalignment.

Also known as compensators, metallic expansion joints are typically used in pipelines, containers, and other kinds of machines, in which they compensate for thermal expansion and relative movement. Each joint has at least one metal bellow, a connector at each end, and some kind of tie rods. Metal joints are most suited for applications involving thermal movement or vibration, especially in such industries as oil and gas, water treatment, energy, chemicals, and pulp and paper.

Sudbury International also supplies non-metallic expansion joints, which blend high flexibility with durability, requiring less force to flex than metallic expansion joints need, but able to handling the stresses of challenging environments. These joints are recommended for providing stress relief for piping and ducting systems, offering such benefits as easy installation, convenient repairs, and high chemical and corrosion resistance. In addition, they work in a wide range of temperatures. Smelting, electrical utilities, petro-chemicals, and pulp and paper are among the industries that rely on these joints.

Metallic and fabric expansion joints come in various forms. Sudbury International carries three types of metal joints – axial, angular, and lateral. In addition, non-metallic joints come in many different materials and shapes, including square, u-type, belt-type, round, and rectangular. Whatever the application, the right joint is available.
