compensators

Metal expansion joints, also known as compensators, are available from Sudbury International.

For long-term, cost-effective solutions, businesses have been turning to Sudbury International Engineered Products Limited for decades. A major portion of the supplier’s lineup is taken up by expansion joints, such as fabric, rubber, and dog-bone joints, especially for ducting. Sudbury International is a great source of metallic expansion joints, also known as compensators. The company can use its collective experience and expertise to help customers find the right metal joints for their specific needs.

Recommended for pipelines and containers

Invented by Emil Witzenmann in 1920 in Germany, metallic expansion joints are compensating elements for thermal expansion and relative movement. Each of them consists of at least one metal bellow, which is produced with a multi-ply design, as well as a connector at each end and some form of tie rods, depending on the application.

Sudbury International’s line of compensators is frequently applied to pipelines, containers, and other types of machines. They are also very useful in applications that involve thermal movement or vibration in several sectors, like oil and gas, water treatment, energy, chemicals, and pulp and paper.

Manufacturers and suppliers usually classify metallic expansion joints according to their types of movement. The first category, axial compensators, consists of joints that absorb the thermal expansion of a straight-lined section between two fixed points. The distance between the points determines the length of pipeline that requires compensation and, as a result, the axial movement that the joint has to accomplish.

The second type is angular expansion joints. At least two angular compensators are necessary for angular compensation of thermal expansion; full compensation often requires three of them. These joints offer many different combination options for two- or three-hinge systems.

In single-plane or multi-place piping systems, the third option – lateral compensators – is associated with flow redirection by a right angle. It is standard to install these expansion joints in existing 90-degree redirections in these piping systems. This compensator`s movement consists of the required lateral movement and a small axial movement from the joint.

With this range, Sudbury International can offer the perfect solution for every situation.
