Invented by Emil Witzenmann in 1920 in Germany, metallic expansion joints are compensating elements for thermal expansion and relative movement. Each of them consists of at least one metal bellow, which is produced with a multi-ply design, as well as a connector at each end and some form of tie rods, depending on the application.

The second type is angular expansion joints. At least two angular compensators are necessary for angular compensation of thermal expansion; full compensation often requires three of them. These joints offer many different combination options for two- or three-hinge systems.

In single-plane or multi-place piping systems, the third option – lateral compensators – is associated with flow redirection by a right angle. It is standard to install these expansion joints in existing 90-degree redirections in these piping systems. This compensator`s movement consists of the required lateral movement and a small axial movement from the joint.
