expansion joint frames

Sudbury International ducting expansion joints come with different types of frames.

Ducting systems work best when businesses use non-metallic expansion joints from Sudbury International Engineered Products Limited. These joints have been manufactured according to high design standards. One of the areas that producers need to consider is the expansion joint frames. This is because effective sealing depends on the design of the frames to which the flexible element is attached. Both belt-type and flanged-type frames require special design consideration for optimal performance.

Simple, angle, and channel frames

Many variations of expansion joint frames are possible, depending on the structure to which the joints are attached, but there are some basic configurations that cover the majority of ducting applications. Sudbury International expansion joints undergo extensive design considerations when it comes to their frames.

With belt-type joints, four types of expansion joint frames require attention:

  • Simple duct attachment. These frames are effective only for circular ducts that operate at low pressure. In the case of large diameters, clamp bands must be installed in several sections in order to ensure that the clamping pressure is even.
  • Angle frame. This is a simple frame attachment for existing ductwork. The angles should be rolled toe-out in suitable lengths for welding in circular ducts. In the case of rectangular ducts, a fabricated, radiused corner should be used to join the straight lengths.
  • Channel frame. Tapered or wedge washers should be used under the flange when rolled steel (i.e., C-type) channels are used, while radiused corners should be used in rectangular ducts.
  • Fabricated ā€œJ or Gā€ frame for slip in service.

Sudbury International also supplies joints with flanged-type frames. With a simple frame design using a flat bar, internal baffles or flow liners must be clear of the seal material when fitted in this configuration, especially for rectangular joints at the corners. This also goes for joint frames in which the design uses an ā€œLā€ shape.

For hot frame designs (i.e., temperatures above 400 degrees Celsius), it is always a good idea to consult the joint manufacturer for designs applicable to the application being considered.
