It is wise and necessary to check certain things before installing Sudbury International expansion joints.

For ductwork expansion joints that get the job done right, businesses rely on Sudbury International Engineered Products Limited. Before users install these joints, it is wise to conduct certain verifications. The Fluid Sealing Association (FSA) in the United States offers valuable advice on pre-installation verifications for non-metallic joints.

The FSA’s tips on verifications for Sudbury International ductwork expansion joints before installation concern mating flanges, joint frames, and the duct work itself.

Check the installation drawings

A user should confirm the joint location and verify the part number and tag number against the installation drawings. Also check the breach opening and ducting for proper alignment; if the opening exceeds a certain tolerance, consult the original manufacturer. The system anchors, supports, and guides must be in accordance with the piping/ducting system drawings.

It is also important to verify that the mating flanges or expansion-joint attachment area of the ductwork is smooth, clean, flat, and parallel. Mating flanges must be in a good condition, fully, continuously welded, and free of sharp edges or burrs. Also check that the mating-flange dimensions, holes, and clamp bars are correct.

Next, users should verify that the frame flanges of the ducting expansion joints are also in good condition, flat, fully welded, and devoid of sharp edges or burrs. Also check frame-flange dimensions, including inside dimensions, bolt holes, face-to-face, flange straightness, and parallelism. All welded areas should be ground smoothly at the attachment points.

The area around the ductwork should be clear of any sharp objects and protrusions. Expansion joints and components should be kept in their packages from Sudbury International until they are to be installed. The user should verify that all edges that might touch the flexible materials of the joint have a radius. If crane hooks, forklifts, or other handling devices are being used, the contact surface should be protected by cushioning materials. Internal baffles should be in good order and in the correct orientation. One should also verify that bolting will not damage the joint’s outer layers. Finally, use protective covering to protect flexible elements from welding damage.
