expansion joint storage

Sudbury International supplies non-metallic expansion joints for ducting systems.

Expansion joints are one of the main specialties of Sudbury International Engineered Products Limited, and that includes non-metallic expansion joints for ducting systems. To get the best performance out of these joints, the storage environment and time is important to consider. Although the fabric in these joints resist many forms of environmental attack, users should still observe recommended expansion joint storage practices and be aware of any deviations from them.

Indoor and outdoor recommendations

The Fluid Sealing Association (FSA) in the United States offers the following tips for expansion joint storage, including those offered by Sudbury International.

Manufacturers typically specify storage warranty periods based on the style of the joint. If expansion joints have been stored for more than a year, or if a start-up date is more than a year after installation, notify the manufacturer. Inspections should occur at least 60 days before any planned installation. Warranties may become invalid if storage time is abused.

For indoor storage, keep the following in mind:

  • Store joints in cool, dry areas in temperatures from 0 to 65 degrees Celsius;
  • Protect flexible elements and pillow insulation from humidity;
  • Place unpacked joints on secure bases;
  • Keep heat sources, moisture, dirt, and petro-chemicals away;
  • Never store equipment on top of joints;
  • Do not store joints in heavy-traffic areas;
  • Do not remove the joints from their original containers prior to installation; and
  • Leave the shipping bars on the joints until installation.

The FSA has some similar advice for outdoor non-metallic expansion joint storage. Again, joints should be protected from heat, moisture, dirt, and chemicals and kept out of heavy-traffic areas. In addition, store them in their original containers at least one foot above the ground in a dry area where flooding will not happen. Cover them with tarpaulins or heavy plastic for weather protection, and cover the flexible elements and pillow insulation with waterproof shields to protect from rain, humidity, and dampness. In low-temperature environments, store joints inside warmer environments immediately before installation, as cold air can increase resistance to bending.
