manual lathes

Rotem offers Standard Modern lathes by Racer.

Racer Machinery is a Cambridge, ON-based manufacturer that makes high-end manual lathes under the Standard Modern brand, and Rotem Industrial Products is proud to supply them to its customers. These lathes are the preferred choice for training institutions and schoolboards across the country, and the American and Canadian Armed Forces use them too. Rotem offers the complete Standard Modern line, as well as replacement parts for certain models.

Quality, durability, and longevity

Racer has a strong international reputation for manual lathes that offer quality, durability, and longevity. Unlike much of the offshore competition, Standard Modern lathes’ replacement parts are readily available from the manufacturer and stocked in Cambridge; in some cases, machines as old as 70 years have been supported as a result of a proven design that has not changed significantly since these lathes were first manufactured. A large inventory of replacement parts are available for the 1300, 1600, 2000, and 2600 series lathes.

These lathes from Rotem have a technical capability that complies with rugged military testing certification, which is typical of the Standard Modern design. With hard and ground ways and hard gears, each lathe is hand-scraped into position, and the headstock sits on a V that is not pinned into position, but travels the length of the bed. This results in a stable, rigid machine that can handle a lot of abuse.

Another advantage is the standard lead-screw reverse feature, which enables semi-automated repetitive threading. This makes the machine foolproof and eliminates the need for disengaging the lead-screw, which allows repeatable, high-quality thread for demanding teaching environments.

Other notable features of Standard Modern manual lathes:

  • High capacity;
  • Strong suitability for tool rooms, maintenance, and production;
  • Capability of metric threading without spindle reverse;
  • Super-stiff bed;
  • Many optional accessories;
  • Special prices for Ingersoll Cutting Tool start-up kits; and
  • Two-year limited warranty.

There are more than 20,000 Standard Modern installations all over the world, in such countries as the United States, Canada, Bermuda, and Turkey. These include specially designed lathes on U.S. Navy submarines, aircraft carriers, and destroyers, as well as lathes incorporated into deployed mobile units. In addition, many educational institutions in North America use Standard Modern lathes for training purposes.
