A new addition is coming to Springs & Things’ Mississauga, Ont.-based manufacturing plant this month, and bringing with it additional capability and capacity.

The CNC spring and wire form making machine, Model HTC-10XU, is equipped with 14 axes, and will fill two needs for the company.

“It’s going to improve our technology,” says Paul Costello, president of Springs & Things. “Also, it’s going to help us meet increasing demands in this wire range — fine wire springs and wire forms.”

It’s a lighter machine than any other on the company’s shop floor, handling 0.20-mm up to one-mm wire.

The machine the Model HTC-10XU is replacing was only able to handle .015-inch material. This new machine can coil and form down to .008-inch wire diameter.

Costello says he can now quote on projects he wouldn't have quoted on in the past because he'll have the right machine for the job.

“It will increase our capabilities, and also add some production capacity,” he explains.

And because the machine is fully automated — the company is able to make the spring or wire form complete off the machine, without having to use any secondary operations to do manual bending or finishing — Springs & Things will be able to produce its custom-made products faster, offering customers better lead times and quicker response times. And the best part? The company can pass these savings on to its customers and stay competitive in the process.

Features of the Model HTC-10XU include: total camless operation; rotating wire; quill in/out movement that ensures easy setup for various radii and bending; a main slide rotating tool holder that provides multi-forming capability and production capability for most springs; a touchscreen that provides easy programming; and single radius and multi-radii servo winders that provide total forming flexibility, making all bending processes fast and efficient. Another bonus: minimal tooling is required, which means lower tooling costs.
