The Brüel & Kjær 2245 sound level meter

Brüel & Kjær test and measurement solutions are available from Durham Instruments, like the B&K 2245 sound level meter (SLM). This SLM device is a robust, waterproof, and dust-resistant instrument for workplaces with grit, grime, or inclement weather. Users can easily connect the B&K 2245 to a Smartphone through Wi-Fi, allowing use from any convenient location away from the sound field with an app control interface. A major advantage of this device is that it helps businesses comply with their provincial health and safety criteria for noise exposure.

Different definitions for each province

Every province has a different set of criteria for workplace noise levels, to prevent noise-induced hearing loss in employees. Ontario, for example, has a maximum exposure limit of 85 dbA, while British Columbia has a daily limit of 85 dbA and peak limit of 140 dbC. In Alberta and Saskatchewan, these limits vary with the amount of time exposed to the noise. The B&K 2245 keeps workplaces aware of sound levels to stay under limits.

This SLM device comes with the Noise Partner app pre-installed. The app, which requires little training, is designed for simple broadband measurement, general-purpose sound-pressure-level measurement, or basic occupational, product, or environmental noise measurement. Among the instrument’s key features:

  • built-in Li-Ion battery
  • colour LDC with bright, clean layout
  • integrated GPS for time and location
  • integrated Wi-Fi Bluetooth Low Energy
  • measurement-status light ring
  • single measurement range from 15.2 to 140 decibels, from typical noise floor to maximum level, A-weighted
  • 16 gigabytes of built-in storage for measurement and annotation

The B&K 2245 enhances many workplace scenarios and applications. Examples include checking sound-pressure levels (to ensure that fire alarms meet regulations, for instance), broadband measurement that requires instruments compliant with specific standards, and simple product testing to confirm other safety compliance.

A versatile unit that meets the IP55 standard, this SLM device suits various applications in many sectors. Durham Instruments recommends it for use in general manufacturing, aerospace, automation, food processing, forestry, the medical field, the military, mining, packaging, power generation, alternative energy, transportation, and research and development.
