Ohio Broach has expanded rapidly over 66 years.

The Ohio Broach and Machine Company has been going above and beyond client demands since its establishment in 1956. It is rare for a broaching provider to last more than 65 years and counting, making Ohio Broach a rare success in this field. This longtime success comes from unique levels of experience, industry knowledge, and a gift for finding great solutions. With these traits, the company has gained recognition across North American industry.

Fast expansion in the 1970s

Founded by entrepreneur Charles “Bud” Van De Motter, Ohio Broach experienced its humble beginnings in a Cleveland four-car garage. The new firm specialized in designing, manufacturing, and sharpening broaching tools for local clients. Demand soon rose for broaching-equipment rebuilding and contract production broaching, so Bud had to expand his practice. In the early 1960s, he moved the company from the garage to a larger facility, to adapt to a rising scope in machine repair and broaching.

The late 1960s brought a milestone in the company’s success. Ohio Broach launched an exclusive line of broaching machines, which helped to boost its already thriving design, sharpening, and production services. Fast expansion necessitated another big move by 1974, bringing the company to a 20,000-square-foot facility in Willoughby, OH. Ohio Broach still operates from this plant, which now measures more than 50,000 square feet.

The company has kept growing in other ways. Ohio Broach earned ISO certification in 1998 and later upgraded to the ISO 9001:2008 standard. It now employs about 35 people and offers broaching machines and services to customers around the world – a client base that reaches the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Israel, the Philippines, South Korea, and China. This brings in an annual revenue of more than US$7 million.
