Customers should consider four distinct factors when selecting wire rope from Bergen Cable.

Bergen Cable is respected among North American businesses for its inventory of cable solutions. But customers also trust this company as a source of wire rope assemblies. Wire rope is like cable, except that it typically has a diameter greater than 3/8 of an inch. The Bergen team comprises seasoned experts in wire rope, and they offer valuable tips to customers on using wire-rope products to their full potential. A big part of this is proper selection.

Finding the most suitable traits

There are four important factors customers should consider when selecting wire rope assemblies, according to Bergen. The key is to evaluate the relative importance of these requirements, then choose wire rope with the traits most suitable for the application and repeated use.

The four factors that Bergen recommends in selection:

  • Strength – Wire rope assemblies are often subjected to direct tension, acceleration, shock loads, bending, several simultaneous forces, and other stresses. Choosing wire rope of the correct strength (determined by size, grade, and construction) helps to reduce the effects of these stresses.
  • Safety – The safety factor of wire rope is the ratio of the weight it can hold to the weight of the total working load. This factor also depends on speed of operation, shock load, fittings used to secure the rope ends, rope length, the number and sizes of sheaves and drums and their locations, causes of abrasion and corrosion, and more.
  • Fatigue – Fatigue failure in wires results from the propagation of small cracks under repeat application of bending loads. This occurs when the rope functions over relatively small sheaves or drums. Repeated bending and straightening of individual wires causes fatigue. Using sheaves and drums of adequate size and a rope with high flexibility can prevent early fatigue.
  • Abrasive wear – Wire rope’s resistance of abrasion depends on size, carbon and manganese content, heat treatment of outer wires, and construction. Larger outer wires of less flexible construction better withstand abrasion than finer outer wires of more flexible rope do; high carbon and manganese make rope stronger.
