The options

Each application is presented with its own unique demands for strength, abrasion and corrosion resistance. These demands determine which material should be used — stainless steel or galvanized carbon steel.

Stainless steel is the most expensive option; however, it is the best choice if corrosion is a concern. Type 302 is the most common grade used because of its high strength and ability to resist corrosion. Types 304, 305, 316 and 321 are also frequently used in wire rope, each with their own advantages. For example, type 305 is ideal when non-magnetic properties are required; however, this option comes with a slight loss of strength.

Galvanized carbon steel, on the other hand, is a good option when corrosion resistance is not a concern, as it is less costly, but still offers high strength. Wires used in these wire ropes are individually coated with a layer of zinc, which offers some protection from corrosive elements.
