Screw conveyors are known as one of the most versatile and economical types of bulk material handling equipment on the market. These conveyors can be used as feeders, distributors, collectors or mixers to move materials horizontally, on an incline or vertically. They can be equipped to heat or cool during conveyance and, with proper covers and gasketing, can be made weather-proof, dust tight and rodent-proof. In addition, their compact design allows them to fit easily into restricted areas.

There are many options available for screw conveyors, which is what allows them to meet a wide range of needs and requirements. Therefore, when selecting a screw conveyor, there are certain factors to consider to ensure it’s the most appropriate conveyor for the application.

Conveyor capacity

Take a look at how much material you need to move. The capacity of a screw conveyor is determined by conveyor diameter, trough loading and speed. These factors vary the amount of material per hour the conveyor can handle. Keep in mind that an excessively fast conveyor can not only result in product traffic jams, but it can also cause more rapid wear of system components.

Material analysis

Take a look at the material that will be handled by the conveyor to determine the ideal diameter of the conveyor. The material to be conveyed impacts the horsepower requirement. Also consider the abrasiveness of the material. The more abrasive the material being handled, the greater wear the conveyor components are subjected to.

Operating cycle

Consider how often the conveyor will be used. For example, a conveyor operating for just two hours per day does not require the same heavy construction as one designed for constant usage, 24 hours a day. Operating cycle determines the necessary material thickness and drive sizes for the conveyor.

Many more considerations

When selecting a screw conveyor, companies must also determine the required horsepower, as well as motor and shaft size. There are, of course, many other factors to consider, so it is important to source the conveyor from a company with experience.
