One of several models of Sandpiper containment-duty ball-valve pumps

York Fluid Controls Ltd. supplies air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pumps by Sandpiper. One unique, exclusive Sandpiper product line is its family of containment-duty ball-valve pumps, the only complete AODD series with superior spill containment. This protects not only the pumps themselves, but also workers and the environment. Part of the high-quality Signature Series, these spill-containment pumps are essential for highly corrosive, hazardous chemical fluid requirements.

Continued operation without interruption

In a typical AODD unit, breaches of the pumping diaphragm cause fluid to enter the air-distribution system and escape through the muffler into the environment, which requires maintenance immediately. In a Sandpiper containment-duty pump, the liquid enters a containment chamber instead, which causes visual indicator sight tubes to alert users. The containment allows the pump to keep operating without interruption until maintenance. This eliminates safety and environmental hazards, extra maintenance, expensive cleanup, loss of system liquids, needless downtime, and product or process contamination from the air supply.

Each Sandpiper spill-containment pump has an extra driver diaphragm. The containment chamber is in the space between the diaphragms, void of air and full of system-compatible liquid; this locks the two diaphragms together. When the driver diaphragm is breached, the system fluid enters the chamber, which allows the indicator to notify the user, and no liquid escapes into the environment.

Several options for Sandpiper containment-duty ball-valve pumps are available from York Fluid Controls. The ST25 and ST40 metallic models can each handle up to 6.3 millimetres (mm) of solids and a maximum pressure of 125 pounds per square inch (psi). There are also four non-metallic versions (the S1F, S15, S20, and S30), each with a maximum pressure of 100 psi. Their solids handling ranges from 6.3 to 18 mm, with maximum flow running from 201 to 901 litres a minute and displacement from 0.72 to 3.41 litres.

Sandpiper recommends these pumps for pharmaceuticals, food processing, cosmetics, perfumes, blood, alcohol, cyanotic-based paint, precious-metal-based liquids, and printer ink. Watch this video for a closer look:
