The Sandpiper two-inch S20 Evolution AODD pump

Sandpiper’s portfolio of air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pumps is available via York Fluid Controls Ltd., including the best, most versatile AODD solution on the market: the two-inch S20 Evolution. This is an upgrade of the S20 standard-duty ball valve pump, which has been a popular choice for businesses for decades.

Six years ago, Warren Rupp (Sandpiper’s parent company) created the Evolution model by reengineering the S20, making a few simple changes to its components.

A new measuring stick

Available in metallic and non-metallic models, the S20 Evolution improves on the once-marginal efficiency gains of typical AODD pumps. The Evolution offers 59 per cent less air consumption and 32 per cent higher flow rates. With these upgrades, this pump has earned a reputation as the new measuring stick for two-inch AODD pumps in numerous industries, like ceramics, chemicals, coatings, electronics, wastewater treatment, transportation, packaging, pulp and paper, and steel.

Heavy-duty pumps are crucial for harsh, changing applications. Dewatering mines, for example, requires units that can handle a wide spectrum of water levels and pressures, as well as abrasive liquids and suspended solids. The metallic two-inch S20 Evolution from York Fluid Controls is versatile enough for these requirements, along with market-leading maximum flow rates and the lowest air consumption in its class. Among the material options are aluminum, cast iron, and stainless steel.

The 2017 upgrade of the S20 to the Evolution involved leveraging of simulation technology, computational fluid dynamics, and nonlinear analysis to shape the pump’s flow areas and flow paths and make it far more efficient than competing pumps were. Another major priority of the upgrade was to keep the pump simple while avoiding unnecessary accessories and features.

As a large displacement pump, the S20 has a diaphragm with about half the stroke rate of those in competing AODD units, which extends the operation lives of diaphragms, check balls, seats, and manifolds. This results in a more efficient, durable pump that costs less for consumables while using up less maintenance time. Its externally serviceable air-distribution system enables fast, simple access for cleaning and repair.
